We often speak of “fiber” as if it were one single thing, but the Lord has furnished the earth with a variety of plant foods, each carrying its own kind of roughage, each performing its own quiet labor for our bodies. When you know these different kinds, you can choose your food more wisely and gain the full benefit that simple, wholesome fare was designed to give you.
First, there is what is commonly called soluble fiber. This sort of fiber is found in foods like oats, barley, beans, lentils, apples, citrus fruits, and many so‑called “psyllium” preparations. When soluble fiber meets water in the stomach and small intestine, it forms a soft gel. That gel slows the emptying of the stomach, moderates how quickly sugars and fats are absorbed, and binds certain substances along the way. In a very real sense, it serves as a gentle governor on the digestive machinery, keeping things from moving too fast or too wildly.
One of the marked benefits of soluble fiber is its effect on blood fats. By diluting potential toxins and hastening their exit, it is thought to lessen the time that the intestinal lining is exposed to harmful substances. And as this pattern is repeated day after day, the body finds its proper balance more easily, the mind grows clearer, and you are better prepared to receive and render the duties of each day.
